This First Aid at Work training course helps employers meet the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. These regulations require adequate and appropriate first aid provision in the workplace. The course is designed for people who act as the appointed person or nominated first aider. It gives you the skills to manage real first aid incidents confidently and safely.​

Who this course is for

This course suits anyone who is the appointed person for first aid at work or who has been nominated as a workplace first aider. It is also useful for supervisors, team leaders and staff in higher‑risk environments who want a recognised Level 3 first aid qualification.

What you’ll learn

On this First Aid at Work training course, you cover essential knowledge and practical skills needed to manage incidents at work, including:

• How to assess the incident and the overall situation

• Managing your own personal safety and that of bystanders

• Contents and correct use of an HSE‑approved first aid kit

• Priorities of first aid at work

• Resuscitation techniques and the chain of survival

• Carrying out a primary assessment of a casualty

• Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines

• Management of an unconscious casualty

• Management of circulatory disorders

• Treating choking casualties, fractures, burns and scalds

• Responding to conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, anaphylactic shock and diabetes

You also learn about the key legislation that affects workplace first aid. In particular, the course explains:

• Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations

• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations

• Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)

As a result, you understand what to do in an emergency and why these actions matter legally and practically.

Course format, duration and assessments

The full First Aid at Work training course runs over 3 days, with around 6 hours per day excluding breaks. If you choose the blended course, you complete part of the learning online. You then attend 2 days in the classroom for the practical elements.

Assessment includes two parts. First, you complete a multiple‑choice test with 48 questions. You must achieve at least 36 correct answers to pass. Second, you take part in continuous practical assessment throughout the course. This includes CPR and casualty management on the floor.

Because the course is practical, you should wear comfortable clothing, such as trousers and flat shoes. This makes it easier and safer to kneel, move and take part fully in all exercises.

Accreditation and certification

All delegates who successfully complete the First Aid at Work training course receive a Level 3 certificate from the awarding body Protraining EU. In addition, training delivered via this awarding body gives you the option to take a regulated qualification. This is helpful if your organisation requires formally regulated first aid certification.
